Abstract
RESIST is a pioneer online educational video game. It addresses between 12 to 18 years-old, allows the user to see through the construction, and encourages them to express themselves simply by creating their own alternatives and affecting the course of the game. The user can play the game by handling a variety of everyday situations, where he has to think how he can react to these situations and what the consequences will be in every reaction. RESIST was created from teenagers that were socially excluded.
The main aims of the game are to diffuse the philosophy on drug-prevention and to enhance protective factors which contribute in warding young people off drug abuse. Through social-skill training and resistance training adolescents learn to trust themselves and develop protective behaviors like choosing healthy environments, resist to peer-pressure, emotional balance, learn ways of stress coping without drugs, handle negative and positive emotions like frustration, anger, rejection, love, joy and success.
The game provides official information about addictive substances like tobacco, pills, alcohol, regarding their chemical commendation and their consequences to physical and emotional health. Also information about addictive behaviors like the excessive use of internet and computer are available.
The participants of the conference, who focus on its basic position that the internet except for the risks which has, it is also an area with multiple opportunities and challenges, will have the opportunity to wander the “world” of RESIST and exchange views with the authors.

I represent the Drug Prevention Centre ELPIDA which was established in October 1998 in collaboration with the local municipal administrations. It is addressed to all the residents of the Eastern part of Thessaloniki’s Prefecture. This is the area where our actions take place , the Eastern part of Thessaloniki’s Prefecture.

RESIST
RESIST is a pioneer enterprise of educational video games. Its avant-garde work lies on two basic facts:
- 1st there is no previous experience on games focusing on primary prevention and
- 2nd it has no intention to “tie down” the player with hyper real textures, super game engines,
Aim of RESIST, that is addressed to young people at the age 12 to18, is to negotiate meanings round the prevention in the language of adolescents, developing a means familiar with them as is the PC.
RESIST allows the user to see through the construction, and encourages him to express himself simply by creating his own alternatives and affecting the course of the game.
RESIST is an attempt to resist to anything endangering our lives; it’s a set-off for a more creative dialogue and substantial communication with young people.
In the beginning the user can watch a video which is a tour to the game where the hero makes some extremes selections, he has a conflict with his parents and as a result he ends up to be alone and confused. Then the user can play the game by handling a variety of everyday situations, where he has to think how he can react to these situations and what the consequences will be in every reaction.
There are 6 different situations where the user has to deal with :
- in his house with his parents
- in his school with his schoolmates
- in a party with his friends
- in the street with his friends
- in a tattoo store and
- in an internet café
A dialogue starts when the hero meets some other characters. The player can choose the character and also can choose among 2 or 3 answers. After this he can watch through a video the consequences of this choice. Also he can return and have a different choice.
Providing official information about addictive substances like tobacco, pills, alcohol, regarding their chemical commendation and their consequences to physical and emotional health. Also information about addictive behaviors like the excessive use of internet and computer.
Recently, we created a Web page for resist where someone can play the game and also take information about various topics such as: work, smoking, alcohol, drugs, ecology, internet, aids, Videos, sex, TV, violence, education.
We also created a blog which we hope to constitute a space that we might be shared thoughts, concerns, reflections on wider subjects that can occupy the young people. There, each one might impress the ideas and his concerns as well as be informed for the running developments in the space of prevention.
We are very proud to tell that « Resist » is one of the three programs that was awarded with the “European Drug Prevention Prize 2008” by the Council of Europe.
Τhe Council of Europe awards “European Drug Prevention Prize ” in the frame of activities of Group Pompidou, mission of which is the co-ordination of 35 countries “ in the fight against drugs.
